Technology strategy for organizations that put people first.

We’re a small team of technology advisors for nonprofits and community organizations in Indianapolis and across the Midwest. We sit in the room with you, explain the options in plain language, and make sure what you spend on technology serves your mission.

Most nonprofits make technology decisions alone.

The organizations doing the most important work in our communities are often the least well served by the technology industry. Vendors sell software nobody asked for. Consultants arrive, write a report, and leave. And the executive director, already carrying too much, signs off on expensive technology with almost no one to ask.

You don’t need a helpdesk or another product. You need someone who understands your world, asks the right questions, and stays long enough to see the answer work.

Every dollar spent on the wrong technology is a dollar that didn’t reach the people you serve.

A partner, not a vendor.

Three things you can expect from us in every engagement.

  • We’re on your side of the table.

We have no financial stake in what you choose. When we help you weigh a purchase, a renewal, or a vendor, the only interest in the room is your mission.

  • We speak plainly.

We translate what a technology decision means for your staff, your budget, and the people you serve, so you and your board can decide with confidence.

  • We stay until it works.

A strategy document on a shelf isn’t worth much. We join your meetings, advise as decisions come up, manage your vendors, and see new tools through until your team is using them.

What we help with.

Every engagement is scoped to your organization, and the first conversation is always free.

Technology strategy and advising

Ongoing or one-time guidance on your technology decisions. We can review what you have and hand you a prioritized plan, or take a regular seat at your leadership table: weighing options, managing vendors, and tying each technology dollar to the mission, without the cost of a full-time hire.

A good fit when you’re facing a big purchase or renewal and nobody on staff can judge it.

Practical AI guidance

A grounded look at where AI helps your organization and where it doesn’t. We evaluate tools, check whether you’re ready for them, help staff use them responsibly in work like grant writing and donor communications, and write a policy people can follow.

A good fit when staff are already trying AI tools and you have no policy yet.

Technology grant writing

Turning a technology need into a request funders can say yes to. We build the budget, the outcomes language, and the impact narrative, so the ask reads as an investment in your programs.

A good fit when you know what you need but can’t fund it from operations.

Project engagements

From technology implementation and guidance to development work, a project engagement is a flexible way to meet your organization’s particular technology needs and get past the niche challenges that don’t fit anywhere else.

A good fit when you have a specific need and want it handled from start to finish.

Affordable housing providers, community land trusts, and neighborhood organizations with heavy compliance, case management, and reporting needs.

  • Health and human services

Health nonprofits and human services organizations handling sensitive data and HIPAA requirements without an IT department.

  • Community foundations and advocacy

Grantmakers and advocacy groups managing donor relationships, grant portfolios, and public-facing technology with a small staff.

Not sure you fit? Ask us. We’ll tell you honestly.

It starts with a conversation.

  1. A conversation

A free 30-minute call about your organization, what you’re using now, what’s frustrating, and where you want to go. No pitch. We listen first.

  2. A proposal

We scope the work: a one-time review, a specific project, or an ongoing monthly arrangement. Clear scope, clear expectations, no surprises.

  3. Working together

We get to work alongside your team, and we adjust as your organization and its needs change.

Questions people ask before they reach out.

How is Alongside different from an IT support company or a vendor?

An IT support company fixes what’s broken. A vendor sells you something. We help you think clearly about technology before you spend a dollar. We sit on your side of the table, have no financial stake in what you choose, and stay involved until the decision pays off.

We’re a small nonprofit with a limited budget. Can we still work with you?

Yes, and smaller organizations often benefit most. A single project engagement is a good place to start, with no ongoing commitment. We can also help you build the technology request into a grant proposal. The first conversation is always free.

What does a first engagement look like?

A good first step is a technology review. We look at your current tools, systems, and spending, find the most important gaps, and give you a clear, prioritized plan. It’s a low-commitment way to see where you stand and how we work together.

Do you work with organizations outside Indianapolis?

We’re based in Indianapolis and like to work in person with organizations here and across Indiana. Advisory work also suits remote collaboration, and we work with organizations across the Midwest. If you’re unsure whether location matters, ask us.

We’re not sure what kind of help we need. Is that okay?

Yes. “Something isn’t working, but we’re not sure what” is a fine place to start. A discovery call is a chance to talk through what’s happening and work out together where the pressure is. No agenda needed.
